In addition to producing and presenting shows on BBC’s 6 Music station (including his own show ‘An Insiders Guide To…’ plus standing in for Iggy Pop’s regular show), Steve, with his company Magnum Opus Broadcasting created a successful radio documentary series for BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music titled ‘The Record Producers‘.
This acclaimed documentary series focusses on the art of record production from the producers perspective. Featured producers of this series included Trevor Horn, Nile Rodgers, Tony Visconti, and Hugh Padgham. A second series was also commissioned, which focused on production teams including Swain & Jolley, Langer & Winstanley, Holland Dozier & Holland, Gamble & Huff, Stock, Aitken & Waterman and Jam & Lewis.
The third series focussed on Clash guitarist Mick Jones, Brian Wilson, Roy Wood and 10cc, with the fourth series analysing the work of Mike Chapman & Nicky Chinn, Smokey Robinson and Todd Rundgren. The fifth series included producers Stephen Street and Bernard Butler, with further shows including a Pink Floyd special, a Bee Gees special, and a Reggae producers edition. As part of a Sir George Martin special (from the BBC 60’s season), Sir Paul McCartney arranged for Steve to have exclusive access to the original Beatles multitracks. This extremely well-received series earned Steve a Sony Radio Award for Best Specialist Contributor.
Following the success of ‘The Record Producers’ series, in 2015 Steve presented ‘The Record Producers Live’ with special guest Lamont Dozier, and also received a World Radio Award in New York for his BBC Radio 2 documentary featuring long time friend Boy George.
