Shane Williams MBE Biography

Shane Williams is one of Welsh sport’s all-time greats and one of the biggest names in world rugby, scoring 60 tries in 91 Test matches for Wales and the British & Irish Lions, leaving only Australian great David Campese (64 from 101 Tests) ahead of him in the list of all-time international try scorers.

A proud Welshman, Shane was born in Morriston, Swansea, but grew up in Glanamman. He started his junior career as a scrum-half at Amman United before joining Neath as a second-choice scrum-half. Neath’s then-coach, Lyn Jones, spotted his talent and moved Shane to the wing to accommodate him in the side. The rest, as they say, is history, as Shane became an integral member of the Welsh national team for the next ten years.

Shane is Wales’ most capped winger, and was part of the 2005 Six Nations Grand Slam-winning side where he scored tries against Italy, Scotland, and England. He was selected by the British & Irish Lions for the 2005 tour to New Zealand and equalled the single-game Lions record by scoring five tries in a midweek match against Manawatu.

In November 2008, Shane became the first Welshman to be named IRB International Player of the Year and in December won the BBC Welsh Sports Personality Of The Year award, with Wales winning their second Grand Slam in four years. He helped Wales to the semi-finals of the 2011 World Cup, scoring 3 in 5 appearances in New Zealand.

In April 2014 Shane received his MBE from the Queen for services to Welsh Rugby.

Shane spent the final years of his career coaching and playing in Japan for the Mitsubishi Dynaboars, before retiring from competitive rugby in 2015. He is now forging a new career as a pundit, covering the 6 Nations Championship and the Rugby World Cup for ITV as well as regularly co-commentating for BBC, BT Sport and S4C.

He is proud to be an ambassador for The World Wildlife Fund, Velindre Cancer Research and Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice.
