Joe McGann is a British actor with an established career – from appearing in Sting’s multiple Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Circle Critic’s Award nominated musical ‘The Last Ship’ (which debuted on Broadway) to high-profile BBC television dramas such as ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ and ‘Dangerfield’, and performing in numerous theatre productions, Joe is both highly versatile and engaging.

The Hanging Gale (BBC1)

in 1995 Joe, along with his three brothers Paul, (known for his roles as Doctor Who and in Withnail and I), Mark (who is known for his Oliver nominated ‘Lennon’ stage performance), and Stephen (known as Dr. Turner in BBC’s ‘Call the Midwife’), starred in BBC1 drama ‘The Hanging Gale’– a highly original story based upon an idea of Joe and Stephen’s that arose when the brother’s conducted research into their family history.

The Upper Hand & All Creatures Great and Small

During this period Joe also appeared in hit Columbia TriStar TV comedy series ‘The Upper Hand’ as Charlie Burrows, appearing alongside Honor Blackman and Diane Weston, and in two long running extremely successful BBC1 television series’ ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ and medical drama ‘Dangerfield’.

ITV Television Roles & Terry Pratchett Adaptation

Joe then appeared as a key character in ‘Night and Day’, an ITV mystery soap opera, for which Joe was nominated for a British Soap Award. Joe has also provided the voice for many television productions including voicing ‘Masklin’ for the ITV adaptation of ‘Truckers’ (the first of three books in Terry Pratchett’s ‘The Nome Trilogy’). Joe has also appeared in extremely popular television shows such as ‘Midsomer Murders’, ‘Boon’, ‘Mersey Beat’, ‘Harry Enfield & Chums’, ‘My Family’, ‘Casualty’, and ‘Heartbeat’.

Theatre Productions & Fiddler on The Roof

Joe appeared as ‘Grimes’ at the Chichester Festival Theatre in the 2003 stage musical adaptation of the novel ‘The Water Babies’, and starred as the paterfamilias ‘Teyve’ (the lead character) on tour with ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and as ‘Richard’ in ‘Lost Monsters’ (at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre).

Joe has also appeared as ‘Ray Say’ in ‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’ on a UK wide tour, and he joined the cast of Elf: The Musical in October 2015, starring as ‘Walter Hobbs’. Other productions Joe has appeared in include ‘Calendar Girls’, ‘One Fine Day’, ‘Oliver!’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, and ‘Of Mice and Men’.

Presenting/Guesting

As a presenter or guest, Joe has appeared on numerous chat shows and popular television programmes such as STV’s daily magazine show ‘The Hour’, ‘Celebrity Masterchef’, ‘The Wright Stuff’, ‘This Morning’, ‘Loose Women’, and ‘The Saturday Show’.

Sting Musical: The Last Ship

Since 2018 Joe has toured the UK appearing in Sting’s musical ‘The Last Ship’ as ‘Jackie White’ (the shipyard’s foreman). ‘The Last Ship’ is a musical (inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences) which details the lives of a shipbuilding community facing the demise of their industry. Originally opening on Broadway, The Last Ship contains mostly original material which coincided with an album release from Sting of the same title. Opening in Newcastle for the UK leg of the tour, The Last Ship received 5 star reviews and widespread critical acclaim.
