IAN DONALDSON BIOGRAPHY

Ian Donaldson is a singer/songwriter, producer, critically acclaimed author and radio broadcaster responsible for the iconic Top 20 UK Chart hit ‘I Dream to Sleep’ with his Scottish rock band H20, and for his career as a successful author.

EARLY DAYS AND H20

Originally studying Art & Design in Glasgow amongst contemporaries such as Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice), Ian began his music career in the late seventies, founding band H20 with leading music industry executive and key British music figure Alan McGee (of Creation Records fame).

Débuting in 1978 at a CND Rally in Glasgow, the early H20 consisted of members Neil Clark (Lloyd Cole and the Commotions) and Andrew Innes (Primal Scream).

The bands indie single Hollywood Dream was released in 1981, with the prestigious RCA Records signing the band in 1982. Hits ‘I Dream to Sleep’, ‘Just Outside of Heaven’, and ‘Blue Diamond’ quickly followed, along with album ‘Faith’ in 1984. Ian also recorded a solo version of the Walker Brothers ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’, showcasing his unique vocal range.

SOLO CAREER

With a career spanning over 40 years, Ian has toured, recorded and produced music as part of H20, and also with recent solo album ‘From Stars We Came’ (released on Toy Town Records). This album showcases bold and imaginative songs, reflecting upon a life lived to the full.

The reaction to ‘From Stars We Came’ was incredibly positive, appealing to H20 fans and new listeners alike. Recent tours have showcased a rich set full of classic and modern material, with many successful headline shows.

AUTHORSHIPS AND BOOK FESTIVALS

Ian’s debut novel ‘A Rainbow in the Basement’ was published by Strident Publishing in 2017 and launched at Glasgow’s annual Aye Write Book Festival. It was nominated for the prestigious Saltire First Book Prize. Donn Albright, who worked with Fantasy Writer Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451) for over 50 years kindly wrote an afterward for ‘Rainbow’: ‘This is fine writing that rivals Ray Bradbury at his very best’. Ian is currently writing his next novel with more literary festivals and also music tours planned.
